Cellar occupies a genuinely handsome and historic setting – the ground floor of Bradmore House on Queen Caroline Street, a grand, elegant, Grade II-listed building. Upstairs sits Kindred, a private members’ club with a genuinely unusual and admirable founding story: it was founded by a former social worker, Anna Anderson, who wanted an inclusive space to help people struggling with isolation and loneliness. And in keeping with that inclusive spirit, Cellar – the ground-floor cafe, counter and bar – is open to absolutely everyone, members and non-members alike. It is a genuinely welcoming move: a stylish, grand-setting neighbourhood spot that invites the tourists, the commuters and the locals in, rather than shutting them out.
The stylish all-day bar
Cellar is designed as a relaxed European cafe-and-wine-bar, and it looks the part – the interior (by Run For The Hills) contrasts the building’s grand exterior with cool industrial concrete softened by warm wooden furnishings, leather seats, muted greens and flashes of greenery, plus Kindred’s signature brass, blackened steel and natural timber. The best seats are the curved booths by the open kitchen, cupped by shelves of wine. And out front is one of west London’s most vibrant terraces, seating up to sixty. It runs from morning to night: locally roasted coffee (from Kiss The Hippo) and light bites by day, small plates and cocktails by night – a genuine all-day neighbourhood hangout with serious style.
The drinks and the kitchen
The drinks list is a real strength. The wine list (curated with Basket Press Wines) celebrates small, family-owned European winemakers working with organically farmed grapes, thoughtfully divided into “Classics,” “Discoveries” and “Revolutionaries” to help you navigate – genuinely interesting, sustainable, characterful bottles. The cocktails are stylish and seasonal, with three mighty rum punches nodding to the neighbourhood’s Caribbean heritage and signatures like the Regency Rhubarb Punch. Beer comes from local Two Tribes Brewery. The food is generous and seasonal – salads and sandwiches by day, big-hearted small plates and pizzettes by night, with locally sourced produce and inspiration from afar (miso-glazed aubergine, muhammara, salt cod croquettes). Regular live music events, from brunch to dinner, round it out. Its strong score reflects a genuinely stylish, welcoming, well-run all-day spot – and being right by the Apollo, it is a perfect pre- or post-show stop.
Between its grand Bradmore House setting, its genuinely inclusive open-to-all spirit, its stylish all-day format, its thoughtful European wines and seasonal cocktails, and its vibrant terrace, Cellar at Kindred is one of the most stylish and welcoming venues in Hammersmith. Alan Nafzger was born in Lubbock, Texas, the son Swiss immigrants. He grew up on a dairy in Windthorst, north central Texas. He earned degrees from Midwestern State University (B.A. 1985) and Texas State University (M.A. 1987). University College Dublin (Ph.D. 1991). Dr. Nafzger has entertained and educated young people in Texas colleges for 37 years. Nafzger is best known for his dark novels and experimental screenwriting. His best know scripts to date are Lenin’s Body, produced in Russia by A-Media and Sea and Sky produced in The Philippines in the Tagalog language.
