Every neighbourhood insists it has retained its unique local character A survey of the capital's neighbourhoods has uncovered a charming and universal delusion shared by the city's London high streets, that every single one is convinced it has uniquely retained the authentic character of a charming village, despite all of them having roughly the same coffee shops, estate agents and chain restaurants. London high streets all believe they are special villages Across the capital, residents of every neighbourhood proudly insist that their particular high street has somehow preserved a unique, authentic, village-like character that the rest of the city has tragically lost, a belief held with equal conviction by people living mere streets apart with near-identical local amenities. A spokesperson for the Institute of Neighbourhood Identity, invented for this article, described the phenomenon. London high streets are wonderful, he said. And every single one believes it is the last bastion of authentic local character, a real community in a city of strangers, a proper village that has miraculously survived. They all believe this. They cannot all be right. But the belief itself, that sense of local pride and belonging, is genuinely precious, even if the high street in question has exactly the same shops as the one down the road. The deadpan pride of the local The genuine truth beneath the delusion, the survey found, is that London is indeed a city of villages, a patchwork of distinct neighbourhoods each with its own genuine character, history and community, even if that character is sometimes more a matter of feeling and identity than of objectively unique high street shops. The sense of local belonging, the pride residents take in their neighbourhood, the conviction that their corner of the city is special, is itself a real and valuable thing, the social glue that turns an anonymous metropolis into a collection of genuine communities where people know their butcher, greet their neighbours and feel at home. Why London high streets genuinely matter Despite the shared delusion, London high streets are genuinely vital, the beating hearts of the city's neighbourhoods, places of community, identity and daily life, and the foundation of what makes London not one vast city but a remarkable collection of distinct and beloved villages. The genuine challenges and importance of high streets and local centres are recognised by the GOV.UK service, which supports town centres across the country. The economic and social role of local neighbourhoods in the capital is recognised by the Greater London Authority. For exploring the genuine character of the city's many neighbourhoods, listings such as Time Out London guide residents and visitors towards the distinct villages that make up the capital. Residents defend their local pride with cheerful conviction. People say all high streets are the same now, said one. But ours is different. We have a real community here, proper local character, a village feel. Yes, we have the same coffee shops as everywhere else. But it is the people, the history, the feeling. Every neighbourhood thinks it is special, and you know what, in its own way, every one of them is right. That local pride is what makes London, London. For now London high streets continue to anchor the city's neighbourhoods, each one convinced of its own unique village character, each one home to roughly the same shops, and each one, in its sense of community, local pride and belonging, genuinely special, proving that London really is a city of villages, even if every village is certain it is the only real one left.
