British Railway Announces New Service Model: Trains Will Arrive Whenever Train Feels Like It

Operator Confident That Randomizing Train Schedules Improves Service Predictability

London —

British Rail has announced a new operational model: abandoning fixed train schedules in favor of allowing individual trains to depart and arrive “whenever they feel like it,” with officials confident that complete unpredictability somehow improves service reliability.

“We’ve determined that schedules are restrictive,” a rail operator explained. “Trains should operate based on individual preference rather than regulatory timetables. This represents freedom for trains and improved service for passengers.”

Implementation has resulted in trains that: depart 45 minutes early without warning, arrive 90 minutes late with no explanation, sometimes don’t run at all, and occasionally run multiple times in succession.

Public transportation systems require schedules allowing passengers to plan time and anticipate service. British Rail has eliminated both these concepts.

“Passengers should simply show up at stations and wait,” officials suggested. “Eventually, a train will arrive. They shouldn’t expect timing predictability.”

One passenger waited four hours for train that supposedly operated every 20 minutes. The train never arrived. The next train appeared 15 minutes later operating in opposite direction from desired route.

“This is progress,” rail officials noted while ignoring complaints. “We’re liberating trains from oppressive schedule structures. If passengers want specific departure times, they should bring cars instead.”

Traffic congestion has increased as passengers abandon rail in favor of private vehicles due to unpredictable service. Rail officials celebrate this as evidence of their strategy working: “Fewer rail passengers means fewer schedules we need to manage.”

Transportation planning requires predictable service to encourage public transport usage. British Rail has apparently decided unpredictability is preferable to planning.

“We’re very happy with service chaos,” officials concluded. “It represents authentic freedom for trains and authentic frustration for passengers.”
