Big Ben requests a single day where nobody asks it to pose In an unprecedented development, the capital's most famous London landmarks have reportedly begun expressing a profound weariness with being photographed by an estimated several million tourists per day, each convinced their angle is original. London landmarks plead for a quiet day off The iconic structures, which have stood for centuries enduring the relentless gaze of visitors, are said to have reached breaking point, with one famous clock tower allegedly requesting a single afternoon during which nobody asks it to be in the background of a jumping photo. A spokesperson for the Department of Monument Wellbeing, invented purely for this paragraph, sympathised. Imagine, she said, standing perfectly still for hundreds of years while millions of people take the exact same photograph of you, then complain you do not look as good as you do online. The London landmarks are tired. And who can blame them. The deadpan suffering of the famous building The pressure is said to be particularly intense for the landmarks forced to appear in every single tourist's photographs whether they wish to or not. One bridge reportedly longs to simply be a bridge, allowing people to cross it, rather than serving as a permanent photographic backdrop for proposals, holidays and influencers doing yoga poses. Even the lesser-known landmarks report exhaustion. A modest but historic statue, accustomed to centuries of quiet dignity, has found itself suddenly viral, attracting crowds who photograph it without the faintest idea who it depicts, why it matters, or what it did to deserve this. Why London landmarks remain magnificent Despite their alleged fatigue, London landmarks remain among the most beloved and breathtaking sights on earth, a collection of monuments, palaces and towers that tell the story of a city and an empire in stone, glass and the occasional unfortunate plaque. The genuine history and significance of these structures is preserved by Historic England, which protects the buildings that the tourists photograph so relentlessly. Many of the grandest sites, including royal palaces, are cared for by Historic Royal Palaces, which keeps the history alive behind the selfie sticks. For visitors planning which landmarks to overwhelm next, Visit London provides comprehensive guides, ranking the must-see sights and helpfully omitting their emotional state. Tourism officials insist the landmarks are honoured, not burdened, by the attention. A monument that nobody photographs, said one, is a monument that nobody loves. The London landmarks are adored. They are simply, understandably, a little overwhelmed by the sheer volume of that adoration. A campaign has even been launched to grant the most photographed landmarks a formal day of rest, during which they would be draped in tasteful sheeting and left in peace. Tourism chiefs rejected the idea immediately, pointing out that a covered landmark would simply attract crowds eager to photograph the sheeting and speculate about what lay beneath. For now the city's great landmarks stand firm, as they always have, enduring the cameras with quiet dignity, posing for the millionth photograph of the day, and dreaming, perhaps, of a single grey morning when nobody asks them to smile.
