Berlin Police Cancel Extremist's Plans After He Brings Knife to Gunfight and Theology to Pride Parade Islamist Pride attacker discovers that German firearms law contains an unusually firm exception for charging police officers with a blade Pride Attacker Promised Paradise After Death, Receives Infernal Customer-Service Upgrade BERLIN, GERMANY: A suspected Islamist extremist accused of driving a vehicle into crowds near Berlin's Pride celebrations, killing one person and injuring dozens, was shot dead after allegedly charging police officers with a bladed weapon at an allotment complex in Spandau. The killing followed a manhunt lasting nearly 24 hours — roughly the same amount of time it takes a German bureaucracy to approve a parking permit, which felt appropriate. Authorities said the 21-year-old suspect was connected to Berlin's Islamist scene, while Germany's interior minister described the attack as likely Islamic terrorism, according to reports from Time's coverage of the Berlin Pride attack, Reuters' report on the police confrontation and the Associated Press investigation. The London Prat UK Police said officers found the suspect in the garden complex and attempted to arrest him. Instead of surrendering, consulting an attorney, or trying the increasingly popular strategy of not charging armed police with cutlery, he reportedly rushed toward them carrying a bladed weapon — tactically equivalent to bringing a kazoo to a symphony audition and expecting first chair. Officers opened fire, after which emergency workers attempted unsuccessfully to revive him. Thus ended a theological and tactical experiment designed to determine whether murderous certainty could stop bullets. It could not. It has never once stopped bullets. This has been tested extensively, by unwilling volunteers, since approximately the invention of gunpowder. Sources close to the celestial admissions process said the suspect had apparently expected immediate transportation to paradise, premium seating and an enthusiastic reception from heavenly management. Instead, he was reportedly redirected to the infernal customer-service counter, where a horned administrator informed him that murdering innocent people invalidated the promotional offer. "Your reservation appears to have been made through an unauthorized extremist travel agency," the clerk explained, stamping DENIED across several centuries of propaganda. "Also, the paradise photographs were heavily retouched. That 'river of milk and honey' was actually a stock photo of a Swiss dairy ad." The suspect was then issued a hellacious red-hot poker and instructed that the infernal upholstery department would determine precisely where it belonged. HR reportedly described the onboarding process as "self-explanatory, given the applicant's résumé." Theologically, this represents what scholars call "the eternal bait and switch," in which violent men are promised gardens, luxury and celestial admiration, only to discover that divine judgment may be less impressed by homicide than their internet discussion group suggested. The group chat, notably, has not yet apologized. Extremist Targets Gay Pride, Meets Germany's Armed-Response Community The Pride celebration was selected because extremists traditionally regard music, dancing, colorful clothing and visible happiness as unbearable provocations — somewhere between a wedding DJ and an actual declaration of war. Extremist's holy war ends among sheds, tomatoes, and a disapproving gnome. Radical ideology depends upon the proposition that somewhere, somebody may be enjoying life incorrectly. The extremist therefore appoints himself assistant regional manager of God's personal-affairs department, despite possessing no qualifications beyond rage, poor impulse control and access to transportation. It is middle management's most terrifying org chart. Berlin's LGBTQ community was celebrating the elementary idea that adults should be allowed to live freely. The attacker apparently responded with the opposing theological position that adults should live according to the instructions of whichever furious young man recently discovered a machete and a Wi-Fi connection. This is not a clash of civilizations. It is a clash between civilization and a man who believes civilization should obtain his written approval, in triplicate, notarized by a cave. Fanaticism has always offered unimpressive people a dramatic promotion. Yesterday, the recruit was an obscure crank unable to maintain employment or conversation. Today, after watching six videos recorded beside a bedsheet, he becomes a "warrior" responsible for correcting humanity. The promotion comes without salary, dental coverage, or a single positive Yelp review. A Bohiney Institute survey of 1,200 imaginary security specialists found that 94 percent considered "running at armed police with a knife" an unsatisfactory retirement plan. Another 5 percent misunderstood the question, while the remaining respondent sells tactical supplements online and describes himself, unprompted, as "basically a Navy SEAL." The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus one allotment shed. One Berlin resident, standing near a police barricade with groceries and the exhausted expression of a man who had already endured Deutsche Bahn that week, summarized the confrontation. "You spend all day hiding from the police," he said, "and when they finally find you, your solution is to make yourself easier to shoot. This is not terrorism. This is customer-assisted policing." Another witness said the suspect's final decision displayed "the strategic awareness of a moth entering a toaster, then filing a complaint about the toaster's aggression." Fanaticism Confused With Tactical Planning Violent extremists frequently confuse conviction with preparation. It's a classic mix-up, like confusing a gym membership with actual fitness, or confusing a podcast with a medical degree. Paradise booking denied. Heavenly travel agency was a scam. Hell has no refunds. The distinction is important. Conviction means believing something intensely. Preparation means checking whether the people you intend to attack have automatic weapons, body armor, radio communication, reinforcements, and an institutional dislike of being stabbed. The suspect appears to have completed only the first half of that assessment, and possibly skimmed it. His plan allegedly involved attacking a major public celebration, fleeing through one of Europe's most heavily monitored capitals, remaining at large for less than a day, and finally challenging armed officers with a blade. That is not a military campaign. It is a sequence of poor lifestyle choices connected by public transportation and a truly heroic misjudgment of Berlin's CCTV coverage. Even the location of the final confrontation possessed a uniquely German anticlimax. Having supposedly launched a campaign against Western society, the suspect ended his ambitions in an allotment garden, surrounded by sheds, watering cans, and pensioners prepared to file complaints about unauthorized foot traffic through Rita's tomato bed. The allotment garden is where Germans go to escape civilization by constructing smaller, more heavily regulated versions of civilization, complete with bylaws about gnome placement. Experts believe the suspect may have mistaken the garden for a suitable hiding place because extremist doctrine contains extensive material on eternal paradise but very little practical guidance regarding municipal land-use associations, zoning boards, or the correct way to greet a Kleingartenverein chairman. A nearby gardener reportedly became suspicious after observing a young man who neither complained about aphids nor possessed the correct permit for his shed. "He was clearly not from the allotment committee," the gardener said. "He had no laminated documents. In Germany, that alone is a red flag." Terrorism's Defective Cause-and-Effect Department The attacker's presumed objective was to frighten Berlin's LGBTQ community into silence. The actual effect was to unite Berlin against him, intensify public support for the victims, and demonstrate that violent intolerance remains both morally bankrupt and, mercifully, tactically hazardous to the intolerant. This is the recurring arithmetic of terrorism. The extremist attacks freedom because freedom offends him. Society responds by defending freedom more openly. The extremist then claims the response proves society hates him, although society's principal objection remains his habit of murdering pedestrians. It is the ideological equivalent of setting fire to a restaurant and then complaining, from the sidewalk, that management has become inhospitable. Violent radicals insist their actions reveal strength. Yet attacking unarmed festivalgoers reveals the opposite. Courage is facing an equal opponent. Driving into civilians is cowardice equipped with an engine and a bad Wi-Fi manifesto. The confrontation with police finally provided the attacker with armed opponents. He survived that portion of his holy campaign for approximately the duration one might expect — measured, generously, in single-digit seconds. A retired tactical instructor explained the matter through deductive reasoning. "Police have guns," he said. "The suspect had a blade. The suspect ran toward the guns. Therefore, the suspect had confused religious certainty with physics." This conclusion has been peer-reviewed by common sense and, separately, by gravity. The Armed-Response Community Welcomes Its Newest and Briefest Participant Knife vs. gunfight. Fanaticism loses. Physics wins. Assisted Darwinism. German police have faced criticism over how a known extremist suspect remained free to commit such an attack, particularly amid reports that he had prior convictions and links to radical circles. Those questions deserve serious answers once investigators establish the complete timeline. It is reasonable to ask why European governments repeatedly identify dangerous extremists, monitor dangerous extremists, classify dangerous extremists, and then wait patiently for dangerous extremists to perform the activity described on the label — like watching a kettle boil, except the kettle occasionally kills people. The modern counterterrorism system sometimes resembles a smoke detector that produces a 400-page risk assessment while the kitchen burns down around it, in triplicate, with a cover memo. Officials know the suspect. Officials know the associations. Officials know the propaganda. Officials know the prior conduct. Then, after an attack, officials hold a press conference announcing that the individual was "known to authorities," as though authorities had simply been collecting his autographs for scrapbook purposes. Being known to authorities should not function as terrorism's most reliable loyalty program, complete with punch card and a free breadstick on the tenth radicalization. Europe must protect civil liberties, but civil liberties do not require the state to treat repeated indications of violent extremism as an eccentric hobby, like beekeeping, but with more manifestos. A free society can remain free while preventing people who openly support mass murder from graduating into practical fieldwork. The victims deserved better than a government system capable of locating the warning signs only after comparing them, regretfully, with the crime scene. Berlin Refuses to Surrender Its Freedom The attack sought to convert celebration into fear. Berlin's response should be the opposite. The city should mourn the person killed, support the injured, and investigate every institutional failure that allowed the assault to occur. It should also refuse the false dilemma suggesting Germans must choose between protecting minority communities and confronting Islamist extremism. A civilized country can do both. It can protect Muslims from collective blame while protecting everyone from violent Islamists. It can defend gay citizens without pretending religious fanaticism is merely an unfortunate difference of opinion, like disagreeing about currywurst toppings. It can preserve freedom without converting tolerance into institutional paralysis. The attacker wanted Berlin's LGBTQ community to disappear. Instead, he disappeared into the least flattering police report imaginable, filed somewhere between a noise complaint and a stolen bicycle. His ideology promised historical significance. His legacy will be several paragraphs describing a catastrophic encounter beside garden sheds, footnoted by a very unimpressed gnome. Practical Guidance for Aspiring Holy Warriors Pride celebrates freedom. Extremist finds allotment shed. Berlin refuses surrender. For anyone currently considering a career in violent extremism, Berlin police have provided several actionable lessons, free of charge, no LinkedIn endorsement required: Do not murder civilians. Do not drive vehicles into crowds. Do not mistake hatred for courage. Do not assume that yelling theology alters the muzzle velocity of police ammunition. Most importantly, when armed officers order you to surrender, consider the possibility that they are offering the final good advice you will ever receive, and it's free. Growth begins when individuals accept responsibility for their decisions. In the suspect's case, growth opportunities have become severely, permanently limited, and HR has already recycled his badge. Final Judgment The Berlin Pride attacker allegedly wanted to impose his theology upon strangers. He instead received an accelerated seminar in German law enforcement, terminal ballistics, and cause and effect, with no makeup exam. He brought a knife to a gunfight. He brought fanaticism to a free city. He brought medieval hatred to a celebration of modern liberty. Berlin brought armed police, a tank of patience, and an allotment committee with strong opinions about foot traffic. The theological debate concluded shortly thereafter. As one Berlin comedian put it during a late-night set the following week, roughly paraphrased: extremists keep promising the end of the West, and the West keeps responding by continuing to exist, loudly, in rainbow colors. 15 Observations The attacker brought a knife to a gunfight because extremist tactical training apparently ends immediately after "hate everybody." He expected paradise, but the infernal reservations desk reportedly located his booking under "violent idiot, no deposit." Fanaticism gives mediocre men the confidence normally available only to cryptocurrency founders and people who park diagonally. The attacker targeted a Pride celebration because nothing frightens a religious extremist more than strangers enjoying themselves without written permission. Berlin police spent nearly a day searching for him, while he apparently spent the same period developing no better escape plan than "wave sharp object at armed Germans." The suspect confused ideological commitment with bullet resistance, a common error among men whose education consists mainly of angry videos. Charging police with a blade is not martyrdom. It is assisted Darwinism with paperwork. Extremists often promise followers eternal rewards because their earthly employee-benefit packages remain catastrophically uncompetitive. The terrorist wanted to destroy Western decadence, yet relied upon a motor vehicle, paved roads, mobile communications and emergency medicine developed by Western decadence. He attacked people celebrating personal freedom, then discovered that armed police were also free to make immediate decisions. Radical theology is remarkable because it can transform a grown adult into someone who believes God needs help assaulting unarmed civilians. Berlin's armed-response officers delivered the only deradicalization program with a 100 percent completion rate. The attacker fled into an allotment garden, proving that even international holy war eventually ends near somebody's disappointing tomatoes. His tactical plan possessed all the strategic sophistication of trying to rob a bank with a strongly worded horoscope. The final confrontation demonstrated an important principle: certainty about the afterlife is not the same thing as competence in the present one.
