Angel Comedy’s pub is a habitat, a training ground, and a bucket-based economy, reports our man in the back bar LONDON — The Bill Murray in Islington is a pub named after a man who has never been in it, running free comedy for people who cannot believe it, staffed by comedians who essentially live there. It is less a venue than a habitat. If David Attenborough ever does a series on the British stand-up in its natural environment, the crew will simply set up in the corner of the Bill Murray and wait.Free Comedy, Which Is A TrapAngel Comedy’s original night at the Camden Head pioneered the model: entry is free, and at the end a bucket comes round. The bucket is the most honest review system in entertainment. Critics can be charmed. Award panels can be lobbied. The bucket cannot. The bucket knows exactly how funny you were, to the pound coin.I have had triumphant bucket nights and I have had nights where the bucket contained three pound coins, a button, and a leaflet for a different comedy night. Comedians check the bucket the way farmers check the sky.A Clubhouse With A Stage ProblemThe Bill Murray itself, Angel Comedy’s own pub, is the circuit’s communal living room. Upstairs someone is teaching a course. Downstairs someone famous is testing twenty minutes about their divorce. In the back bar, four open-mic acts are having the same conversation about agents that has been running continuously since the building opened, like a pilot light. The main room holds a modest crowd at conversational distance, which means the comedy is intimate in the way dentistry is intimate. You will see acts here two years before television finds them, performing material so new it still has the sticker on.For The Audience: Go, ObviouslyAs a punter, the proposition is absurd. Shows all week, many free, the rest priced like a coffee, in a room where the person on stage might be doing their first gig or their thousandth, and both will be worth watching for different reasons. The beer is decent, the staff actually like comedy, and the atmosphere is the closest London gets to the mythical comedy clubhouse every documentary pretends exists.Regular readers of The London Prat will know I am not sentimental about venues. Most London comedy rooms are function spaces with delusions. The Bill Murray is the exception: a place built by comedians, for comedians, funded by a bucket, and somehow still solvent. Bring cash for that bucket. The button was not appreciated. We knew it was you.One warning: the room fills fast, and the overflow crowd watches from the doorway with the longing of orphans at a bakery window. Arrive thirty minutes early, claim a seat, defend it. Comedy is a contact sport in Islington, and the front row is the scrum.SOURCE: https://prat.uk/
