London hotels close to buckingham palace let guests stay by the monarch's residence, close enough to check the flag, never close enough for an invite. LONDON - Hospitality observers have confirmed that London hotels close to Buckingham Palace let guests stay beside the monarch’s official residence, close enough to check whether the flag is flying and far enough never to be invited inside. London Hotels Close To Buckingham Palace: So Near, Yet So Uninvited The grand establishments around St James’s and Victoria, the Bureau of Royal-Adjacent Lodging notes, offer the considerable thrill of proximity to the Palace, the Changing of the Guard and the daily crowds, without the faintest prospect of an actual audience with the residents. “Guests at London hotels close to Buckingham Palace enjoy a peculiar daily ritual,” said a spokesperson for the Institute of Monarchical Tourism. “They check the flag to see whether the King is home. They watch the guard change with great solemnity. They walk past the gates several times. At no point are they invited in for tea. The Palace remains magnificently, gloriously aloof, and the guests adore it all the more for that.” Choosing London Hotels Close To Buckingham Palace The options - listed by Visit London, reviewed by Time Out London, and near the residence detailed by the Royal Collection Trust - cluster around the parks and grand streets nearby. A survey by the Bureau found that 79 percent of guests at London hotels close to Buckingham Palace check the Royal Standard at least once during their stay, and that exactly none received a royal invitation. “Proximity is the entire appeal,” the spokesperson explained. “You will not meet the King. You will, however, be able to say you slept around the corner from him, which is somehow nearly as good.” The daily flag-checking becomes a small, cherished ritual, conducted with binoculars where possible, and guests depart having been thrillingly near to royalty and not one inch closer to a cup of tea inside, which is, somehow, exactly as it should be. The Bureau confirmed London hotels close to Buckingham Palace remain a popular choice for the royally curious, ideal for visitors who enjoy being extremely near the monarchy and entirely outside its guest list.
