Tourists celebrate authentic homelessness after original occupant is moved elsewhere English Heritage Installs Blue Plaque on Cardboard Box Where Man Once Lived Before Rent Went Up Tourists celebrate authentic homelessness after original occupant is moved elsewhere LONDON - English Heritage has installed a blue plaque on a cardboard box commemorating the homeless man who lived there before rising property values forced him out. The plaque reads: "TERRY WILKINS, SLEPT HERE, 2025 to 2026, BEFORE THIS AREA BECAME DESIRABLE." The ceremony attracted heritage officials, local politicians, property developers and thirty-seven tourists. Wilkins was not invited. Organisers said seating was limited. The cardboard property is now owned by an investment company and valued at £720,000. Officials praised the site as "an important reminder of London's disappearing social history." That history disappeared approximately six weeks earlier when the council relocated Wilkins. A Living Man Gets a Blue Plaque, Which Isn't Meant to Happen Tour guides have already added the box to walking tours. Visitors pay £28 to hear how ordinary people once survived in central London before coffee shops arrived. Guides describe Wilkins as "representative of a lost urban tradition." Wilkins, currently sleeping under a bridge two miles away, said he was surprised to discover he was a tradition. "I thought I was just cold," he said. The plaque has increased the property's value by an estimated £95,000. Estate agents now describe the residence as "heritage-linked." A nearby gift shop sells miniature cardboard boxes for £24.95. Each comes with a tiny blue sticker. The shop also sells a £16 mug reading "KEEP CALM AND GET LISTED." Actors Hired to Play Historically Accurate Homeless People Tourism officials say visitors increasingly want authentic experiences. To meet demand, actors have been hired to portray historically accurate homeless people near the site. Performers work in two-hour shifts. They wear distressed coats designed by a theatre costume department. One actor explained that visitors enjoy taking photographs. "The trick is to look exhausted but approachable." The original occupant has been asked not to return. Officials fear his presence could confuse tourists. An English Heritage spokesperson said the plaque preserves memory. "London changes rapidly," she explained. "It is important that future generations know people once lived here before the property market corrected the situation." Local schools plan field trips. Children will learn about early twenty-first-century housing through interactive exhibits. One activity invites pupils to calculate how many years an average nurse would need to save for a deposit on the box. The answer is displayed as an infinity symbol. Wilkins visited quietly one evening. He stood outside his former home and read the plaque. A security guard asked him to move along. The site closes at 7 p.m. The real blue plaque scheme, run by English Heritage in London since 1866, has one rule this satire deliberately breaks for effect, that a person must have been dead for at least twenty years before a plaque can go up. It exists precisely so that plaques commemorate settled history rather than convenient recent inconvenience. A living man honoured for a struggle he is still living through is the joke, but it only works because the real scheme is so careful about the opposite. Sources Crisis's latest figures on rough sleeping in London show the real, ongoing version of the story this plaque pretends is over.
