The London Prat

An exact walking route from Battersea Power Station along the Thames Path to Battersea Park and Chelsea Bridge Bohiney Magazine and The London Prat present the walk that takes you from a Pink Floyd album cover into a peaceful Victorian park in under twenty minutes. The Battersea Revival Walk Battersea Power Station was the largest brick building in Europe when completed in 1955. It sat derelict from 1983 to 2022 while every London developer took a turn failing to convert it. It is now a shopping, dining and apartment complex, which would surprise Pink Floyd. Or perhaps not. Start and Finish Start: Battersea Power Station Station (Northern Line extension, opened 2021). Finish: Chelsea Bridge or Sloane Square. Distance: 1.8 miles. Time: 40 minutes walking, 3 hours with shopping and park. Exact Directions Exit Battersea Power Station Station. The Power Station looms immediately above you. Its four white chimneys (rebuilt to original 1930s spec) dominate the skyline. Walk through the interior retail spaces if curious, or around to the north side where it faces the Thames. See batterseapowerstation.co.uk. From the Power Station's river side, turn west onto the Thames Path. Walk riverside past new developments with names like "Circus West Village," which sounds like a marketing firm's fever dream. After 600 metres, turn south inland into Battersea Park. The park opened in 1858 on reclaimed marshland. It features a boating lake, a Victorian bandstand, a Peace Pagoda (1985, a gift from Japanese Buddhist monks), and a children's zoo. Walk through the park westward past the lake to the Pagoda. Exit the park at the north-west via Chelsea Bridge. Cross the bridge for Sloane Square, or continue north to Victoria. See batterseapark.org for events. What to See Battersea Power Station (chimney lift gives views, ticketed). Circus West Village. Thames Path. Battersea Park Lake. Peace Pagoda. Bandstand. Children's Zoo. Chelsea Bridge (Art Deco, 1937). London Peace Pagoda is one of only two in the UK. Coffee, Toilets, Survival Coffee: Gail's Battersea, WatchHouse, Power Station mall outlets. Food: the Power Station development has dozens of restaurants. Pear Tree Cafe in Battersea Park. Toilets: Power Station (many), Battersea Park, Chelsea Bridge end. The Humour Interlude Battersea Power Station is the only building in London where you can now buy a 200 pound cashmere jumper on the exact spot where coal was shovelled into a furnace 80 years ago. This is either progress or the quiet death of soot, depending on your angle. A urban heritage satirist has called the conversion "Britain's largest industrial midlife crisis." The chimney lift sends you up 109 metres in a glass tube and deposits you at the top of one of the chimneys. This experience is thrilling, brief, and costs roughly the same as a nice meal, which is the London pricing theme. Local Wisdom Summer weekends for park life, winter weekdays for empty riverside walks. Battersea Park ice rink operates November to early January. The Northern Line extension means Battersea is now an honest 15 minute Tube ride from central London. For heritage satire, see Private Eye. SOURCE: https://bohiney.com/
