Revolutionary solidarity, he learns, does not cover plate glass MILAN - A shopkeeper has thanked anti-capitalist rioters for accelerating his financial education, saying that one broken window had taught him more about risk, incentives and public order than several years of panel discussions about inclusive urban economies. "Before this, I thought my accountant was excessively pessimistic," he said, standing beside an opening formerly occupied by expensive glass. "Now I understand he was simply preparing accounts for people who had met the public." The shopkeeper had previously considered himself politically moderate. He believed employees should be paid properly, customers should receive decent service and the front of a shop should remain attached to the shop. Following an evening of revolutionary outreach, the third position had become his overriding electoral concern. Milan Riot Damage and the Shopkeeper's Balance Sheet Across the city centre, Brussels Signal reported, a supermarket, a department store and several smaller businesses lost windows and stock over two nights of looting around the Duomo. The shopkeeper's street was one of them. His window was the one he happened to own. Demonstrators explained that commercial premises represented concentrated wealth. The owner explained that his premises represented a commercial loan, a refrigeration contract, unpaid invoices and a landlord who had never accepted ideological progress instead of rent. "They saw stock worth thousands," he said. "My accountant saw goods I had not finished paying for. Apparently both of us were looking through the same window until somebody removed the window." Insurance Claims After Riots: Having Cover Is Not the Same as Receiving Money Grazie for the Chaos in Milan His insurer offered immediate reassurance by opening a claim number, followed by a longer conversation establishing the many differences between having insurance and receiving money. Italy's insurance supervisor, IVASS, publishes guidance for policyholders making claims. The shopkeeper read it twice, the second time to check whether it said anything about the word "eventually." The owner was asked for photographs, receipts, inventory records and evidence that the damage had occurred. He submitted an image of a man entering through a wall that had previously been transparent. After the Milan Riots: Everything Must Go, Including the Argument A neighbourhood activist advised him to appreciate the broader context. He agreed to do so as soon as the broader context helped sweep up. The activist explained that anger was a form of communication. The shopkeeper asked whether future correspondence could arrive by email, which generally required less plywood. He was then reminded that businesses benefited from public services. He agreed, explaining that he had been hoping to benefit from the public service responsible for preventing people from taking his till. Shopkeepers in Milan were not strangers to the problem. A 2023 study by the CGIA research group, reported by ANSA, found the city had the highest shop robbery rate in Italy. The riots added a new category: robbery by people with a cause. The Accountant Arrives With a Folder His accountant arrived carrying a folder and the expression of a man whose retirement planning depended on other people continuing to confuse revenue with profit. "The revolution has redistributed your inventory," the accountant said. "The supplier has retained his traditional position on the invoice." Together, they calculated the cost of replacement glass, repairs, missing stock, lost trading hours and paying employees while the premises remained closed. The shopkeeper discovered that the most expensive item in the building had been the assumption that tomorrow would resemble yesterday. An online commentator suggested that insurance made the damage essentially free. The accountant requested this commentator's address so future premiums could be directed to the appropriate economics faculty. Customers arrived offering help. One brought a broom, another coffee, and a neighbouring trader lent tools. The shopkeeper described this as solidarity. Nobody requested a public grant before touching the dustpan. Room Hire, Deposits and the Violence of Capitalism By lunchtime, a protest representative had asked whether the damaged premises might host a community discussion about the violence of capitalism. The owner said the room was available at his normal commercial rate, with a deposit covering damage. The representative objected to the intrusion of market values into civic life. The accountant quietly doubled the deposit. When asked whether the experience had turned him into a conservative, the shopkeeper said labels were unhelpful. He now supported whichever candidate could explain, in one complete sentence, how a person might sell a pair of shoes without first buying riot shutters. Until then, he would continue investing in his business, his employees and a front door whose politics were considerably further to the right. Five Humorous Observations on Riots, Windows and Accountants A conservative accountant is just an accountant who has met people. That's it. Every accountant is conservative the way every lifeguard is nervous. Insurance is the only product where the first thing they hand you is a claim number and the last thing they hand you is money. The claim number is what you get instead of money. The guy submitted a photo of a man walking through a wall that used to be transparent. That's the evidence. That's the whole case. "Here is a man. Here is where the window was." Anger is a form of communication, sure. So is a text message. Text messages don't need plywood. Everybody's a revolutionary until the deposit goes up. Then it's "the intrusion of market values into civic life." Pal, you're renting a room. The room doesn't care about your politics. The room cares about the deposit. This disclaimer is fully insured, though the claim is still being processed. The shopkeeper, his accountant and the room-hire deposit are comic embellishments on genuine reporting of unrest in Milan, which does not establish the politics of every demonstrator.
