Directors Say Employees May Enjoy Personal Lives Between Midnight and 6am LONDON - A major City firm has announced what directors are calling the most generous work-life balance policy in modern business history, guaranteeing employees up to six hours of personal freedom every night, subject to prior management approval and the company's ongoing operational requirements. The initiative, introduced by Maximum Productivity Holdings, allows employees to pursue hobbies, spend time with loved ones, maintain romantic relationships and even sleep between midnight and 6am. "This is a remarkable commitment to employee wellbeing," said chief executive Richard Whitmore during a mandatory company-wide meeting that began at 10:45pm. Employees may request as many days off as they wish, provided the requests are approved. Whitmore described the arrangement as proof of the company's commitment to freedom. "In the old days, employers told workers they were entitled to 5.6 weeks," he said. "Now we place no limit on what they can ask for." The results so far are impressive. In the policy's first quarter, employees submitted 437 holiday requests. Management approved three. Two were for jury service. The third employee had died. "We're very pleased with the engagement," Bradford said. "People are embracing the opportunity to request time away from work." One employee asked whether unlimited holiday meant he could spend two weeks in Tenerife. Human Resources assured him that Tenerife was entirely acceptable. "We have excellent internet connectivity there," Bradford said. "And you can begin your meetings before sunrise." Mandatory Mindfulness Training: Employees Required to Attend Relaxation Seminars To improve employee happiness, the company has introduced mandatory mindfulness sessions. Attendance is compulsory, and employees who skip will receive a formal warning. The sessions teach staff how to relax while managing seventeen simultaneous deadlines. One workshop, titled "Finding Inner Peace During Quarter-End Reporting," asks employees to visualise themselves on a peaceful beach. Participants are then asked to explain how quickly they could finish a spreadsheet from that location. Another seminar covers breathing exercises. "Breathing is one of the few activities that doesn't require additional company resources," Bradford said. "We believe employees should take full advantage of it." Workers who breathe too loudly may be referred to Human Resources for distracting colleagues. The company has also appointed a Chief Happiness Officer. His duties include sending motivational emails, organising compulsory celebrations and explaining to exhausted staff why their unhappiness points to a lack of gratitude. He earns £340,000 a year. He works from home four days a week. Nobody has seen him since June. Remote Work and Work-Life Balance: Employees Discover Home Is Just Another Office Maximum Productivity Holdings has embraced hybrid working as another pillar of its work-life balance strategy. Employees may work from anywhere, including bedrooms, kitchens, hospital waiting rooms and family weddings. Whitmore called remote work a triumph of corporate compassion. "Previously, people had to travel to the office to be exploited by their own ambition," he said. "Now they can experience that same professional fulfilment without leaving their homes." Company officials clarified that remote employees are free to spend time with their families, as long as they remain available for meetings. Management congratulated her and asked whether she had finished the quarterly presentation. Bradford said the company supports parental bonding. "That's why we allow employees to position their babies next to their laptops." The Acas guidance on maximum working hours was circulated to staff. It was returned with comments. Employee Satisfaction Survey: Management Declares Success After Workers Stop Complaining After the policy took effect, Maximum Productivity Holdings conducted an internal employee satisfaction survey. Workers were asked whether they considered the company's work-life balance excellent, outstanding or world-class. Management reported that 98 percent of respondents chose "excellent." The remaining two percent had chosen "outstanding." Nobody selected "world-class," which Human Resources attributed to a broken button. The company announced that employee morale had reached record levels. A journalist asked whether staff had been given a way to express dissatisfaction. Whitmore rejected the suggestion. "We don't believe in encouraging negativity," he said. "Employees should focus on solutions." He then unveiled the next phase of the wellbeing initiative. Employees will be allowed to spend one hour each Sunday doing absolutely nothing, provided they first complete an online training module on the productivity benefits of rest. The module contains 86 slides. Completion is mandatory. Whitmore closed the announcement by reminding staff that Maximum Productivity Holdings considers itself one big family. "We take care of our people," he said. "We support them, nurture them and make sure they have every opportunity to achieve professional fulfilment." He then boarded his private jet for a three-week holiday in Barbados. Before takeoff he sent one last company-wide email. "Remember, everyone. Work-life balance is essential." The message arrived at 2:17am. It was marked urgent.
