The London Prat

A Hackney bar whose Icelandic name brings a touch of Nordic saga and Viking cheer to a South Hackney corner The Prat's naming desk pulls on a fur-lined hood at Helgi's, a South Hackney bar whose name sails straight out of the Norse sagas. "Helgi" is an old Icelandic and Scandinavian name, and a bar that flies it brings a touch of Viking cheer and Nordic warmth to its Hackney corner, which the naming desk salutes with a hearty skal. The Norse name "Helgi" is a traditional Old Norse and Icelandic personal name, borne by heroes of the ancient sagas and still common in Iceland today - it carries meanings connected to holiness or blessedness, and it rings with the sound of the Viking north. To name a bar Helgi's is to reach for all of that Nordic, saga-steeped character: the longships and the sagas, the wild northern romance, the hearty warmth of the Scandinavian welcome. It is a name with real character and a strong sense of place - even if that place is a thousand miles north of Hackney - and the naming desk enjoys the cold northern wind it brings. The Nordic vogue The naming desk notes how well a Nordic name suits the modern mood. There is a real and enduring vogue for all things Scandinavian - the design, the food, the cosy "hygge" warmth, the whole cool northern aesthetic - and a bar with an Icelandic name taps directly into it, promising a certain stylish, warm, characterful Nordic atmosphere. Whether in its drinks, its decor or simply its evocative name, Helgi's offers a taste of that admired northern sensibility, importing a little Viking spirit to South Hackney. The characterful local Helgi's serves its corner of South Hackney, near Well Street, with the strong personality its distinctive name promises. In an East London full of characterful, individual venues, a bar with a Norse name and a Nordic theme carves out its own memorable identity, offering its crowd a spot with a clear and cheerful character. Its strong rating reflects a genuine local following, drawn to the warmth and character of Helgi's hearty northern welcome. The pull of the north The naming desk reflects on the romance of the far north that the name evokes. Iceland and the Nordic lands hold a powerful grip on the imagination - the land of fire and ice, of sagas and volcanoes, of long dark winters and the dancing northern lights, of a culture that prizes warmth and hospitality precisely because the world outside is so cold. To name a bar Helgi's is to reach for that whole northern romance, offering its drinkers a hint of the saga-world and the cosy Nordic welcome that keeps the cold at bay. In a Hackney winter, there is something rather fitting in a bar that channels the warmth of the far north, and the naming desk raises a warming glass to it. Helgi's on the map. The verdict A rating of 4.6 across some 494 reviews marks Helgi's as a genuinely well-loved South Hackney local. A bar whose Icelandic name brings a touch of Norse saga and Viking cheer to a Hackney corner is the naming desk's kind of characterful, evocative branding. The Prat orders a drink, raises a hearty skal to the heroes of the sagas, and toasts the warm northern welcome of Helgi's.
