The station pub "The Railway Tavern" is one of the classic pub names of the railway age - and pubs bearing railway names (the Railway Tavern, the Railway Inn, the Station Hotel, the Locomotive, and the like) sprang up across Britain wherever the railway went, especially beside the stations. They served the great new crowds of railway travellers and railway workers, and they celebrated the coming of the railway to the town. The great transformation The coming of the railway was one of the most transformative developments in all of human history - and it happened, above all, in Britain, in the great railway age of the nineteenth century. Before the railway, travel and transport moved at the pace of the horse, as they had for all of history. The railway changed everything - suddenly people and goods could move faster than ever before imagined, across the whole country, at the astonishing speed of the steam train. The railways transformed the economy, the landscape, society and daily life - shrinking distances, connecting towns and cities, enabling trade and travel and the movement of goods on an entirely new scale, and knitting the whole nation together as never before. It was a genuine revolution - the railway age, the transformation of Britain and then the world by the power of steam. The "Railway Tavern" marks and celebrates this great transformation. The romance of the railway Beyond its transformative importance, the railway has a genuine and enduring romance - and this, too, the name evokes. The age of steam is one of the most romantic in all of history - the great steam locomotives, magnificent and powerful, thundering across the landscape; the grand Victorian stations, cathedrals of the railway age; the romance of the journey, the far destinations, the adventure of travel; the whole beautiful, powerful, romantic world of the steam railway. There is a deep and enduring affection for the railway age - the magnificent steam engines, the great stations, the romance of the rails - that lives on in preserved steam railways, in countless books and films, and in the enduring appeal of the railway. "The Railway Tavern" evokes all of this romance - the great age of steam, the magnificent engines, the romance of the rails. It is a name rich with the power and romance of the railway age. There is genuine history and romance in the name - the coming of the railway, the great transformation, the romance of the age of steam.
