Wimbledon london hosts the world’s most prestigious tennis with a British devotion to strawberries, cream, white kit and a famously orderly queue.
LONDON – Sporting observers have confirmed that Wimbledon London hosts the world’s most prestigious tennis tournament with a peculiarly British devotion to strawberries, cream, all-white kit and a queue so famously orderly it has practically become a sport in its own right.
Wimbledon London: The Queue Is Half The Tradition
The historic championships in leafy SW19, the only Grand Slam still played on grass, pair world-class tennis with rituals the Bureau of Sporting Tradition calls “gloriously, immovably British, none more so than the legendary Queue.”
“Wimbledon London takes its traditions with admirable seriousness,” said a spokesperson for the Institute of Tennis Affairs. “The players wear white, the crowd eats strawberries and cream by the tonne, and fans camp overnight in a queue so well-organised it has its own code of conduct and, essentially, its own folklore. People queue for hours with the patience of saints, sustained by Pimm’s and the certainty that orderly waiting is, in itself, a noble pursuit. The tennis is superb; the queue is a cultural institution.”

The tournament – detailed at its official site, promoted by Visit London and documented on reference pages like the Wimbledon Championships entry – is the oldest tennis tournament in the world.
A survey by the Bureau found that vast quantities of strawberries are consumed at Wimbledon London each year, and that the Queue is regarded by many fans as an essential part of the whole experience.
“Wimbledon London is tennis wrapped in tradition,” the spokesperson explained. “The grass, the whites, the strawberries, and a queue you join almost for the pleasure of it.”
The Bureau confirmed Wimbledon London remains the most cherished tournament in tennis, ideal for anyone who loves the sport and appreciates a generous helping of British ceremony, strawberries and the unique, dignified joy of a very long and very civilised queue.

London is the only city where you can be surrounded by millions of people and still feel completely, utterly alone—and somehow that’s a comfort.
