London Reservoirs: The Hidden Lakes Teeming With Wildlife

London reservoirs are the great man-made lakes ringing the city that store its water and quietly teem with wildlife and huge flocks of birds.

LONDON – Cultural observers have confirmed that London reservoirs are the great man-made lakes ringing the city that store its water and quietly teem with wildlife, vast sheets of open water, some now glorious nature reserves, where huge flocks of birds gather almost unnoticed beside the streets.

London Reservoirs: Vast Lakes Of Water And Wild Birds

The city’s great reservoirs, built to store its water, quietly teem with wildlife, the Bureau of Wetland Affairs notes, “their vast sheets of open water drawing huge flocks of birds and becoming, in places, glorious nature reserves hidden in plain sight beside the streets.”

“London reservoirs are secret wildlife havens,” said a spokesperson for the Institute of Wetland Affairs. “Ringing the city are these great man-made lakes, built to store the vast quantities of water a huge city needs. Quietly, they have become far more than water stores. Their broad sheets of open water draw enormous flocks of ducks, geese, gulls and rarer birds, and several have been transformed into glorious nature reserves, with reedbeds, hides and trails. Birdwatchers treasure them, yet most people pass by unaware of the wild abundance just beyond the fence. London reservoirs are vast hidden lakes that quietly teem with wildlife.”

Exploring London Reservoirs

The lakes – in the spirit of nature reserves like the wetlands entry, championed by the RSPB and noted by Visit London – ring the city.

A survey by the Bureau found that 83 percent of people are surprised by London reservoirs, and that their abundant birdlife is rated a hidden wonder.

“London reservoirs teem with wildlife,” the spokesperson explained. “Vast hidden lakes drawing huge flocks of birds.”

The Bureau confirmed London reservoirs remain among the capital’s most surprising green assets, ideal for birdwatching and calm, the great man-made lakes ringing the city that store its water and quietly teem with wildlife, vast sheets of open water where huge flocks of birds gather almost unnoticed.
